TEMPLE FULL OF HISTORY

The first church under construction in the city of Los Angeles was erected somewhere in the immediate vicinity of what is now the corner of Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard (formerly Sunset Boulevard) and North Broadway Avenue. A 1,400 square foot chapel begun in 1784 continued in use until December 8, 1822 when the church on its present site was dedicated in honor of Our Lady Queen of Angels.

In the 1840s the church was extensively remodeled. The history of the old church buildings aptly represents a changing scenario. The story reflects the very dynamism of the Gospel as the sole reason for its existence. The reason for the change and restoration of these buildings has not been simply for aesthetics. Most importantly, these changes have been motivated by the needs of the people served.
